For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2)

Not of ourselves, and certainly not of our parents efforts!! There is no parent who can boast that their child is a Christian because the parent did XYZ activities/philosophy with them. Salvation is of the Lord. It is a load off my shoulders, that's for sure.

Well written, Our Susan.

Great post Susan! It really is all about choices. My Mum has been and is an incredible example of steadfastly walking in the Spirit in front of her 6 children, 1 who went to heaven at the age of 6, 3 who are not walking with the Lord, 1 who is struggling to walk with Jesus, and me who being no better, but understands and knows the Fathers love. I understand my children will walk out of being under our roof one day and will make there own decisions, and we lean on the scripture "train up a child in the way he should go and when he is older he will NOT depart from it" ~ AMEN

I tried to live by a Christian formula for many years and tried hard to see what I had done wrong when things were not going well. Sometimes I had sinned and was facing the consequences (not always obvious), but as you say Susan sometimes it was just the result of living in a fallen world.
None of us can live up to God's standard of righteousness and none of us can save ourselves from the sad and bad things of the world entirely by being good. anymore than we can save our souls by being good. I think we can teach the children to read Scripture, pray and ask God to guard their hearts, but as much as we would love to we can not save them, that is only in God's power.
