Hey sister!
Wow.....a continuing journey eh :-)
Glad to hear that you are finding a comfortable place in regards to homeschooling, although not always "easy"!!
I am so busy trying to mend myself that the kids have learnt to become more independent themselves. I am less stressed about filling in workbooks and finishing the graded math curriculum so that the child can "move up next year".....maybe its the medication or maybe I have mellowed!! LOL
After just having "lost" our second child (homeschooled from age 11 till 17) to marriage (maybe lost is the wrong word!) I am convinced more than ever that there is SOOOOOOO much more than education cum text book etc etc. Character, love, relationship.......these are the most important for us! and these things you don't learn in a workbook..........

Hi Susan, I really enjoy reading your writings, and are pleased you are continuing to blog. This radical unschooling is something I'd really like to try. I had a 9+ year old boy who is verrry slow to pick up reading. I am trying to do a bit with him every day - he knows all his sounds - phonograms in isolation, but when put into words and sentences - that's when we have trouble. Do you get your children reading then use an unschooling method, or do you wait until they are ready - which there is no guarantee of an age. Would appreciate your comments on this matter.

I love this post - simply because unschooling alwasy seems to be our fallback, where we go when we feel most comfortable. And, like you, I see learning best without curriculum and have found that following interests has ended up being excellent prep for university. I like lots at Sandra's site, too. I find we can take bits and use them in our family - it is not a one size fits all and I don't have to agree with everything anyone writes!

Hmmmm I DID think to myself... "Yeah, but looking out the window, playing a video game or reading ANY magazine is still learning,”

(Except for the video game part but I suppose some video games are educational... )

But I do not live like it. AT least not when we reach middle schoolish levels. Something to think about.
