Hi Cathy, show me an Aussie who doesn't love this movie!!!!! :) Oohhh, you're getting closer to Manila time. :)

Sombra, Yes! you certainly could do it with eh poem you mentioned, especially if you like it, or know a little of its meaning. The site you linked to had a little info already so a great launching pad. But even if you don't want to do any hunting around or exhaust yourself (and I do know a little about that) you could simply use some ideas from my next post- which outlines how I use the 5W's and a H sheet (observation sheet) and combine it with some activities from the Activity Sheet. even that by itself it more than enough. And after awhile I found that these techniques became instinctive - they are so useful and beneficial in ANY subject.

If you have no idea about the poem (which is not so in your case, I believe) you could use these pages to gain a quick overview.

Apparently, in 1975, the Canadian Postal Service paid tribute to Robert Service with a stamp. You could show the children a picture of the stamp and keep an eye out for one.
You could read Call of the Wild by Jack London as a family read aloud or some Gold Rush type family read alouds.
Talk about the historical even which surrounds this poem.
Listen to the author reciting his own poem! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZG9kP9kAiY

Just for starters... In fact that poem sounds like a beauty! So much that one could dig into if desired. If you do, let me know how you go and what you do. I'd love to hear how it went! Feel free to use any of my downloads, especially the Activity Sheet Ideas.

I love it Susan you inspire me, I have picture story books of the Man from Snowy River around too. I love the spontaneity and impulsiveness of learning in that way.......

The movie too shows the beauty of the countryside..........magnificent.

Great teaching, thanks for your inspiration
