My thoughts on reading the Scriptures on the topic of ‘rest‘ and the ‘sabbath‘. I welcome any thoughts or Scriptures on the subject.

Old Testament has many passages. One is Is 58:13-14

13 “If you hold back your foot on Shabbat from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call Shabbat a delight, ADONAI’s holy day, worth honoring; then honor it by not doing your usual things or pursuing your interests or speaking about them. 14 If you do, you will find delight in ADONAI – I will make you ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Ya’akov, for the mouth of ADONAI has spoken.”

Is 58:13-14

(My thought) If I delight in the Lord… if I seek to please Him in word and deed then I will find joy in the Lord.

Purpose of the Sabbath in the Old Testament

  • to think and remember my God.
  • Rest
  • Remember
  • Reverence
  • Refreshment
  • Relationship

Purposes that I found within the New Testament

  • Evangelism or service
  • Fellowship
  • Gifts and offerings
  • Gladness
  • Rejoicing
  • Communion
  • Worship

The Sabbath was meant to be a blessing to man! A special day! The Jewish leaders added lots of rules and restrictions so that it became a burden.

The day doesn’t matter. The Sabbath would’ve been Saturday but our Rest Day can be any day. In the NT we aren’t told to gather or observe the Sabbath or to observe it. We are to *rest* in God EVERY day. We can come to Him daily to rest (cease) from our work.

The OT Sabbath was a picture of a greater Sabbath to come… the substance and fulfillment of Jesus Christ!

Aside from God creating in 6 days and resting on the 7th day, Sabbath observance isn’t mentioned or commanded until Exodus (Moses) and it was given just prior to the Law. It was a set-apart day to remind them that they were set-apart. It was a perpetual reminder.

A Sabbath Year? God will provide food and nourishment for His obedient children. Disobedience resulted in the 70 year Babylonian captivity. Teehee, God saw to it, that the land got its rest!!!!! (I want to do further study on this)

NT – Thoughts I want to look at further: In the NT whenever the 10 Commandments are listed, is the Sabbath Observance listed????

Jesus observed the Sabbath. What about after the death/resurrection?

Acts? They went to the synagogue and read from the LAW and the Prophets and spoke a word of encouragement. Also preaching in the streets (evangelism) or out of the synagogue (Acts 16:13)

We should never judge another with regard to their Sabbath observations, etc Col 2:16

PRINCIPLES of the Sabbath

We can rest today and everyday in Christ. The principles of the Sabbath are still applicable for my life:

* It should not be a day of legalism or tedium. It shouldn’t be stereotyped. It should not be dull, dreary, restrictive or prohibitive but should contain rest, meditation, prayer, singing, worship, (private and corporate) reading of the Scriptures, Fellowship with Family first and then others, and Service / Evangelism.

* A hobby may be used as a form of rest, such as reading, painting, sport etc but of course, the principle of the Sabbath should be maintained. We also need to assess our motives (Phil 4:8)

Mark 2: 27-28

Then Jesus said to the Pharisees, “The Sabbath day was made to help people; they were not made to be ruled by the Sabbath day. So then, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath day.” NCV

And

And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.? Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath. NKJV

~Observing a rest day does seem to be a principle of the purpose of the Sabbath… and it isn’t selfish but a necessary principle for a healthy mind, body and spirit.

REST

Rest is: peace, serenity, cessation of work or labour, it is a time of fulfillment of work achieved.

Why: to rest from the pressures of life and work, to contemplate, to think and meditate upon The Father.

I should set aside a day to be fair to my body, mind and spirit. This day is a gift from God.
