Michelle, no flaming in this response, just offering a perspective...

The reason the theology of the book does matter, is precisely because people will take away "revelations". In one breath, you say you have had a revelation (that is, have been made aware of a *fact* you were previously unaware of), and in the very next paragraph you are amused at people who are concerned about the theology in something that is, after all, only fiction. Do you see a discrepancy here?

Wow - you really did dissect the book!
Well spoken!
I am a fiction writer - I love fiction for the journey. I recomend this book to everyone as a good fiction read. I can see we are on different pages as I love the Message version - I read a parallel NKJV and Message. I see that God uses all things for good.
My personal revelation from reading The Shack was that we are all God's children who he loves equally. Ultimately He is the judge not us. I found the whole coloured female God was something to push the boundaries of our finite minds with an 'out there' concept.
I heard about the controversy only after I read the book and I find it amusing that people can get so caught up in Theology and Religion when the book is categorised fiction.
I'm not very good at putting my thoughts down on paper - fiction is my gift!!

love hope and grace

I had to smile...

I am one of the people who have an issue with God being portrayed as a black woman! :-D

Now, I *haven't* read the book, not because I am so horrified at the thought of said portrayal, but because I have a lot of other reading on my plate at present; so reading just to see what the buzz is about is out of the question.

I have a bundle of dear friends all reading this book, and on raising my objection to God being portrayed as a woman (black or otherwise), they countered with similar statements to yours, Susan. However, my objection is that while He has the *attributes* of motherliness, (the gathering of chicks under wings, the nursing mother illustrations) He has always, without fail, always referred to Himself in the masculine, always instructed us to pray to the Father, always upheld the patriarchy of the family and the church.

I would struggle severely to read (fictional or otherwise) an account of God the Father portrayed as a woman and not see it as blasphemous. It particularly grieves me in light of the feminizing of males our society is trying so hard to bring about, and in light of the rise of feminism in the church.

I have to agree with your comments about Eugine Peterson, though, on every count!

Fiona: Thanks for your thoughts. I know you've been through a tough time lately...my hope is that it drives people to relationship, not religion.

Jacqui: I'd love to hear your thoughts Jacqui...when you've finished it and processed it and then have time to share. Online I've shared a little of your journey and seen your transformation...so I eagerly await your thoughts. :)

Theresa: I *love* what your dd said! That is fantastic. There will come a time when your dd will learn about the holiness of God, His judgment, His wrath, etc so as long as we don't "throw the baby out with the bath water" I think she has picked up a nugget of truth. :)

Thanks gals...I enjoy hearing from other, my friends, that have read the book.

Great, thoughtful post as usual, Susan.
We are reading The Shack as a read aloud. I could never dissect it in the way that you do....I really am a bear of little brain in that way. :silly: You do a good job of doing that.

My daughter, 12 commented after reading it, "God is much nicer than I thought" and I agreed. I thought that was well put and have not really read any of the hype for or against it.

Hi Susan
I am not very far into this book so can't really comment just yet! I am lucky that I had never even heard about the book before being given it by a friend (one of the benefits of avoiding the news and internet for a long time!!) so I go into it with an open mind.
I have found a relationship with Christ during the past year that I have never experienced in my 27 years as a christian.........why? because the shackles of "religion" have been stripped away from my life after reaching the bottom of a pit! All the things that I was taught about Christ and Christianity are being looked at through new eyes and it is very interesting to say the least!
I think this book will add a new dimension to the process of which I am part right now............I will let you know! x
