My dad called me this afternoon. That was a little unusual as we usually speak in the mornings. He had called to tell me that it was pitch black – at 3.30 in the afternoon! He said in his 50 years of living in Broken Hill, he has never seen a dust storm as bad as the ones that it there today.
Of course, people have already uploaded their videos to youtube…check out these videos of today’s dust storms. Freaky! I do not envy the cleanup…red dust would be everywhere and in everything.

Why is this of interest to me? Because I’m a Hill gal- born and bred!
Yea, we woke up to an orange/ red sky! never seen anything like it before in my life in oz! strange! (but exciting for my 5 yr old dd)!
Hey Susan…we awoke to yellowish-orange skies and there is red dust over everything! We are on the east coast of Victoria, 15 min from the NSW border! It was very interesting! xxx
Wow! That is really something!
Clear as crystal in C! 🙂
OOps I spoke too soon. Just heard on the news it is heading north up the coast. Walked outside and it is actually hazy here now.
This is a beauty!
I’m an ex-Broken Hill girl, too! Glad I’m not there now, though!
Wow, hasn’t it all been fearsome…truly awesome! Although here in the northern suburbs of Adelaide we have only had rain…plain and simple. I’m not complaining though- as much s I love BH I wouldn’t want to be cleaning up right now.
Jillian, where you born & raised in BH too? Are you my age? What school did you go to? I went to BH Central and BHHS.
It was amazing, I thought the one that his Queensland a couple years ago was bad but this was huge, and it moved so quickly.
We have it up here in NQ too… although not so much red just very dusty.
I was born in Broken Hill, but we left there when I was about eighteen months of age, but have been back there on a few occasions – mainly to see old friends of my dad. We lived in Sulphide Street, near the Broken Hill Base Hospital. My dad worked in the mines, but left there to become a police officer in Adelaide. 😀
It was a nasty dusty day here in south east Queensland, too.
