I know it has been quick but this reading plan is to introduce your children to an overview of the Bible. Some scholars (and lay persons) spend years or even a lifetime on a particular book but that is not the aim of this quick overview. After this reading plan has been completed, you could go through the Bible again with another plan or using a Chronological Bible. However, this is a good plan for getting through the Bible (the main parts) in one year.
To learn more about how we did Bible study you can read through our 4 step process page using the anagram IDEA: Introduce, Dig Deeper, Elaborate and Application.
Here are five sample lessons of the Kerugma Family Bible Study Guide.
How old are you kids that you’re going through this with? How do you keep them engaged?
HI Mimi,
Thanks for popping by! My children are now quite older. The eldest is 20 (and getting married next month!) and the youngest is nearly 14. We do things a little differently nowadays but this Family Bible Study Overview that I’m compiling is designed for families specifically with little ones. It doesn’t mean that that an individual cannot go through it- it’s probably quite good for the new believer. Rather that these readings focus on getting through the Bible (the major bits) in one year WITH all the distractions that a young family can bring.
They need only take 15 mins a day, although it can easily be stretched out to include a lot more. What I am giving you here is the outline or ‘what needs to be read’. Keeping the little ones engaged can be a struggle but keeping the lessons short is a major key. Depending upon their ages, I suggest no more than 15 minutes. Of cours, you could always have another session after lunch or at night time if you wanted to expand upon the reading further or include Daddy.
Another way of keeping them engaged is by building confidence in their own knowledge- which is done by using the steps of IDEA – Introduce them to the lesson, Dig Deeper, Expand, Apply, which you can find more about here:

This approach has been developed after ten years of teaching our children at home while learning about many other educational approaches. Charlotte Mason methods, unit studies, quality literature, discipleship, the Moore Formula, Robinson Curriculum, Natural Learning, Delight-Directed and Identity-Directed approaches have much truth in them. Nevertheless, no one method or approach fitted perfectly with our family…and I strongly suspect that you, the reader, will feel similar about this site too. That’s good. I don’t want or expect anyone to follow us but I do want you to seek God…I do want you to dig into the Scriptures with your children!
