  • Is Your Girl Drowning in Busyness? at TrueWoman
How can we raise up the next generation of true women if they don’t have time to know God’s Word? How can we pass the baton to a group of girls who are too tired to finish the race? We can’t hope for our girls to value silence, stillness, and Sabbath if they never see us doing the same.
  • Influence Trumps Authority by Cary Schmidt
Do you want your children to love God? Do you want them to truly enjoy living life with and for Jesus Christ? There’s an unspoken principle that many parents or leaders miss. It often goes ignored, unrecognized, and completely invisible.

Pursue the heart of your child! Like the Apostle Paul, be “affectionately desirous” of them. Expend yourself in authentic relationship. In so doing, you will build influence.
When it comes to protecting you child—think “authority.” But when it comes to directing your child—think “influence!”

  • Labeling Children by their Behaviour at HomeschoolandWork is a challenging and thoughtful read.  “Before you say something about your child while your kid is standing there, imagine how’d you feel if your parent, husband, or even child mentioned … ‘Mommy and Daddy have yelling problems’.”

God Delights In Us

There is so much beauty in this video. So much for us to learn from. So many parallels with our life with God. The dog’s human has obviously done some work to collect the leaves and provide such a playful, enjoyable environment. And then the dog simply delights in having fun with what his human has provided. He isn’t exercising as a chore or duty yet he is using his body to its full extent – the way God intended. and he’s obviously having a boatload of fun doing it too!

And the human – look at him. Is he complaining about the mess? Is he telling the dog to sit still? Is he barking (pardon the pun) orders at the pooch? No,he is delighting in it all. Is the dog trying to please his human friend or is he simply enjoying life, using all his senses to the best of his ability? Delight all round!

This is how God looks upon us as we live the lives in the place He has provided for us. God delights in us. Our lives don’t have to be full of rigidity, somberness and dull faces. We can live life! And have fun. We are allowed to enjoy life! In fact, He wants us to. He is pleasured when he watches us living and enjoying life within the environment He has provided for us.

If knowing that God delights in me as His child, how does this reflect in my role as a parent to my children?

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness.”
Zephaniah 3:17

How Do You Share the Gospel?

Do you ever struggle in sharing the good news with others throughout your day? Maybe you don’t know where to start? With the creation of the world or just hit them with their need for a Saviour?

Dr. Julius Kim, Dean of Students and Associate Professor at Westminster Seminary California, provides insight into how he shares the gospel. This is also a good video to watch with your teens.

The Hunger Games for the Christian Parent

Yes, I have read the trilogy. Yes, I have watched the movie. Yes, Falcon has also read the trilogy. And yes, as soon as he gets home from camp we will go together and watch the movie. I am using this as a tool- to teach many valuable lessons whilst shielding my son from the harsh realities that exist in the world around us. This is part of our goals, for our children, for our homeschool… Good! Now that’s out of the way. 🙂

** Falcon is a fairly mature 14yo, which is the recommended minimum age for this series.

When looking for articles and reviews on The Hunger Games from a Christian perspective there are a multitude that will say it is not productive, beneficial or the right type of material for Christians to watch. (I have to wonder how many of the nay-sayers have actually read the trilogy though) I guess that all depends upon one’s worldview. We aren’t training our children to be ignorant of the world around them although we desire for them to be innocent of the same practices. (Click here to read a previous post on Training Children in Innocence or Ignorance) Literature is an excellent medium for teaching all kinds of themes and concepts that are simply icky and difficult for young adults to comprehend in the real world.

The following links are not biased with a negative bent toward the books. Just FYI.

I’m not going to write a full review and offer details. The links I provide do a great job of that. If you want to know more, grab yourself a copy of the books and read them for yourself. It’s probably quicker and more beneficial that you do so anyway. For you. They’re not a difficult read. I’d rate them about a Grade 7 level in literary quality.

Weekly Wrap 'n' Catch Up

I took the photo below a few weeks ago when Falcon and I went for a walk to do some photography. There is a little waterfall and picnic area. It is a serene and peaceful area and I’m glad to have spent an hour or so there. But life has not been quite so smooth over the last week or so.

John had to go away for three weeks to Victoria, for work. As usual, something went wrong and I had car troubles again. If you visited our home you wouldn’t think it possible. For me to be car-less. But I assure you it is. Yes, there’s a car in the shed, one on the front lawn, one on the kerb and two in the drive-way. Yet at one stage, not one of them was usable! Egads! I ended up driving one of them around but I prayed every time I got in and out of it.

Rambo also went away during this time. He went on a school camping trip as part of Outdoor Education. They went rock climbing and he had a great time. This left Falcon and I at home. Alone! Good times. Quiet times. Clean and tidy times!

Eventually all my men-folk came home and all seemed fine. Seemed fine. John hurt his knee. He’s had some time off work and will have even more as he waits to see a specialist and be assessed for surgery. Poor John, it seems to be one thing after another with him. 🙁

So I’ve been playing taxi – to my husband! That will obviously continue for awhile, until he’s able to drive… and work.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”
~Matthew 4:4

Encouraging young people to read the Bible – Creating a culture of Bible reading
You might want to give them a crash course on the Bible: what it is, who wrote it, what’s in it, how to find different books, the big picture etc. You could do a short Bible overview spanning a few weeks. And when you mention Bible passages or verses, get them to turn to them (and read them out loud), so they get used to handling the Bible and reading it for themselves. If we take the alien-ness out of the Bible, it becomes a normal practice to turn to God’s Word, not a last resort.

Teach Children the Bible Is Not About Them (I love this article!)
Ask your children these two questions today. Do you sometimes think you have to be good for God to love you? And second, Have you ever thought that if you aren’t good, God will stop loving you?
When we drill a Bible story down into a moral lesson, we make it all about us. But the Bible isn’t mainly about us, and what we are supposed to be doing—it’s about God, and what he has done! When we tie up the story in a nice neat little package, and answer all the questions, we leave no room for mystery. Or discovery. We leave no room for the child. No room for God.

Learn The Bible In 24 Hours – fantastic overview!

Learn the Bible in 24 Hours is presented by Dr. Chuck Missler of Koinonia House. The series consists of 24 one-hour videos. This would make an excellent semester series for a middle – high schooler. I have read the book and it’s worth reading… but these videos will give you an audio/visual review of the entire Bible and its design. I recommend it!

Hour 1 – Introduction
Hour 2 – Creation And The Fall Of Man
Hour 3 – The Pre-Historical Period
Hour 4 – The Patriarchs
Hour 5 – The Birth Of The Nation
Hour 6 – In The Land
Hour 7 – The Monarchy
Hour 8 – The Poetical Books
Hour 9 – The Book Of Daniel
Hour 10 – Post-Exile History
Hour 11 – The Major Prophets
Hour 12 – The Minor Prophets
Hour 13 – How Sure Can We Be
Hour 14 – The New Testament
Hour 15 – The Gospels
Hour 16 – The Last Week
Hour 17 – The Book Of Acts
Hour 18 – Romans
Hour 19 – The Church Epistles
Hour 20 – The Hebrew Christian Epistles
Hour 21 – Eschatologicial Summary
Hour 22 – Revelation 1-3
Hour 23 – Revelation 4-22
Hour 24 – Conclusion

If you were using this for your middle/high schooler, you could add in some living books, the Bible readings and you would have a full course for an entire semester!

If you added English lessons (copywork, dictation, grammar, etc) as well as historical fiction you could use this as a full year course.

Fantastic free resource! Do consider adding this to your family bible study.

Building Kingdom-minded children
The Bible seems to divide the life of people into three phases. Childhood, young adulthood and adulthood, according to my sweet learned husband. Both the Old Testament refers to words that describe such an age as well as the New Testament, as seen here in John.

In our home, we treated our children differently at each phase. Each new level of life came with new training and responsibility in order to give them a heart for our King and for His kingdom. I believe that there are many paths to teach these principles, but no matter what path you take, it all involves very intentional and purposeful training and planning.

To Heaven and Back? by Defending. Contending.

http://defendingcontending.com/2011/09/01/to-heaven-and-back/
A somewhat sensitive issue in today’s society, even amongst Christians… but how much of it lines up with the Bible? To Heaven and Back ponders these issues by studying the Scriptures.

How many times have you heard someone claim they died and got a glimpse of heaven? Recently a co-worker told me the Pastor of her sister’s church preached a sermon on heaven. In his sermon, he mentioned a little boy who’d died and entered heaven {the child was revived by doctors}. While in heaven, he saw his grandpa who he’d never met. The mother of the child showed the little boy a picture of his grandpa, and he said that wasn’t him. So she proceeded to show him another picture, one of his grandpa when he was younger, and he said that was him. I didn’t say much as I listened, but all the while I knew what she thought was true was anything but. Stories like this are told everywhere, those who do not understand what the Bible actually teaches about death and heaven swallow this as truth.

Heads or Tails?

http://theupsidedownworld.wordpress.com/2011/09/01/heads-or-tails/
Rebecca Trotter ponders what it means that Christ is the head of the church? We assume that this verse means that the husband should lead his wife, but does Christ really lead the church?

A husband’s job is not to direct his wife in the way that she should go. A husband’s job is to give his wife hope and comfort and the freedom to become who she was created to be (a secret only her heart knows, btw), just as Jesus offers hope and comfort and freedom to become who we were created to be in the Kingdom of God. This has nothing to do with power and authority and everything to do with love. Paul was telling men that they should be empowering their wives to be who God designed them to be and presenting their wives to Christ as an example of how well they loved.

I haven’t played a game on facebok for weeks… haven’t blogged much, haven’t been on AussieHomeschool but… I have been on Pinterest!

So what is this Pinterest thing all about? Basically it is your own creative, visual pin board. When you find images of anything that you like, you can ‘pin it’ to your pinterest. You can peruse other people’s boards and like their pins or add it to your own collection. Sure, I can see that some people would wonder why on earth this pinning trend is catching on but it’s really all quite natural – not much different to keeping a scrapbook. When we were first married I kept a scrapbook. No, not a fancy thing like Creative Memories book, rather just a paper scrapbook that I would post lovely images, quotes, scriptures or notes into. Come to think of it, it’s much like blogging! Well Pinterest is a little different but rather than read all about it, pop over to my (rather small) Pinterest page and see the things I like.

I am collecting images of things that inspire me or that I like.

  • Images of home decorations that I could never afford not manage in a rental
  • Clothes that I would never buy or wear
  • Colour schemes that I love but will never be able to use
  • Coffee because I love the colours and artwork
  • Scrumptious food that I simply couldn’t be bothered to make but it all looks good
  • Plants & gardens that I will never plant or grow
  • Word art and saying that I couldn’t think of myself but always nod along in agreement
  • Crafts that I’m too lazy to make

pinterestIf you’d like to join Pinterest, let me know and I’ll send you an invite.

If you are already pinning, let me know your email address/username so that we can pin together.

Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

I don’t have a car. A car that works. So I don’t go out. At all. This makes for a slightly frustrated mumma come the weekend. not saying that I need to get out for ‘me time’ rather just to go to the grocery store and pick up fresh ingredients so that I can get an early start with tea. As it happens, I haven’t been getting to the store until after 4.30pm, then home again to star tea… not eating until late which means I leave the kitchen cleanup for the morning!! Shock! Horror! But who likes jumping out of bed in the morning to be greeted by a messy kitchen?

In our homeschool this week…

For the first time in thirteen years we have applied to the Ed. Dept for an Exemption of Attendance from School. Yes, remember my I-will-never post? This was one of the lessons I’ve learned. Anyway, it took some sorting out to get all the paperwork assembled and written (remember we’ve been Delight-Directed, Relaxed, Semi-Unschoolers for years) and then to go to the local school and enroll the boys whilst also asking for a Principal’s exemption just in case this whole process took longer than four weeks.

Anyway, the visit happened and that is a whole ‘nother story in itself. The *guy* wasn’t real interested in hearing about Master J as he is enrolled with Open Access College (herein referred to as OAC)  and doing all his lessons through there. He was more interested in Master C. Funny thing is that Master C has been doing a lot more bookwork and learning with his homeschool program that Master J. Oh well, I guess it’s that enrollment and proper education that matters, eh? [sarcasm over]

My favorite thing this week was…

Aside from being with family (duh!) I enjoyed the most delicious, richest, chocolatiest, Italian Hot Chocolate that I’ve ever had when we went shopping.

Watching the DVD presentation, Indescribable by Louie Giglio. Not only does this video fit in with our Astronomy theme and 2011 being the Year of the Solar system but it is simply a powerful message. I loved it because he wasn’t preaching at me. He didn’t feed me a bunch of rules or a list of things I must do as a Christian. Rather he showed the works of God… he showed us how big God is. How can I not be totally in awe of God after catching a tiny glimpse of His awesome majesty?

What’s working/not working for us…

x Having the house we live in up for sale! All these house inspections are doing my head in. We have another one on Monday. I want to get into planting autumn veggies and ripping out the front garden to make way for some floribunda roses but the open house days means I can’t.
x Health. My health, my body is not working as it should, hence my need for a detoxification of caffeine and some healthy green smoothies. John has also been unwell with a fatty liver (an ongoing syndrome that we usually manage through diet and exercise).
✓ Thursday was THE most amazing night for star gazing and using the telescope. Okay so *I* don’t exactly do any star gazing but John and the boys do. This however excites me.
✓Master C devised his own ‘lesson’ schedule and he sticks to it! I’ll share this is another post.

But my dear sister-in-law is a supplier and so I have gone back to using them. I almost forgot how fantastic (as in excellent and economical) they are. I love the All Purpose Cleaner.

I frequently link to Sheila’s blog and this week is no exception. She writes on ‘Do our Kids mature too slowly?‘. Love the quotes excerpt from a book she is reading.

“We place kids in schools together with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of other kids typically from similar economic and cultural backgrounds. We group them all within a year or so of one another in age. We equip them with similar gadgets, expose them to the same TV shows, lessons, and sports. We ask them all to take almost the exact same courses and do the exact same work and be graded relative to one another. We give them only a handful of ways in which they can meaningfully demonstrate their competencies. And then we’re surprised they have some difficulty establishing a sense of their own individuality.” And we wonder why it’s taking so long for them to mature.

Web wanderings 15-2-11

Sunset Beach by Diane Romanello

  • Dr. Albert Mohler wrote The Marks of Manhood, (When does a boy become a man?) which I think is great.
  • Last year we bawled through, er watched the made-for-tv movie, Gifted Hands, the story of Ben Carson. I might be the only adult believer who hasn’t read the book yet… and I am asking myself why this is so. I cannot believe I haven’t read this inspiring biography. If you haven’t watched this movie with your children then please, run out to the video store and hire it. You will not be disappointed. And if you are, well I won’t say anymore.   This movie has affected me so profoundly… but time will tell, won’t it. (Maybe I’ll write how this movie and book has affected our parenting and homeschooling style)
  • And lastly, I’m sure you all know about this movie review site but just in case you don’t I’ll mention it again. Plugged In Online is a fantastic review site. It is a sister site of Focus on the Family and it is my go-to site for reviews of movies. Why? because it doesn’t tell me what I should and shouldn’t watch. Rather it gives me the details of the movie without revealing the spoilers. It details the positive elements, the sexual, violent, drug/alcohol and language content, and lets me decide from there.

Benefits of reading the Bible: Consistently ’grazing on the Bible’ helps give us our sense of identity as Christians. It is an irreplaceable source of nourishment, correction and transformation for every Christian.

How to Study the Bible from Logos.com
All Christians who open God’s Word and read it bring with them the forestructures of their lives formed by their history, their language, and their culture in which they live, therefore it is imperative upon every reader to capture the original intent of the author. Since no one can approach the text without presuppositions, then one must exercise every safeguard to interpret the Word of God correctly.

There are Christians, and then there are ‘Christians’. The ‘Christians’ do more harm to one another than anyone else I have ever known. And yet there ARE Christians who are very loving, grace filled people. I like these kind of Christians.

Gentlemen in a Digital Age from SoloFemininity
The fine folks of Jane Austen’s world might strike us today as being a bit rigid in their manners. But they demanded character and accountability even among the limited relationships of a small town. How much wiser would we be to honor the same practices in a world without boundaries.

Wanderings round the web 8-2-11

There are a few reasons that I stopped blogging.

1) Felt the need to protect my children’s privacy and not write about their lives so much
and
2) I’m ashamed to say that I used Facebook instead. It’s just so easy to share links and things on FB.

Now I’m not going to give up on FB but I am going to try and share links and anecdotes again here on the blog. So along those lines, here are some links to things I’ve been reading online lately.

I spent an hour at the online chat room of Rainbow Diva’s and the National Homeschool Network in An Afternoon with Beverley. Beverley Paine is a long term, South Australian homeschooler and homeschool consultant. We had a lovely afternoon and I’d encourage other Aussie homeschoolers to check it out. Hope to see you there next month!

A South Australian local tv channel aired an interview/article on homeschooling. You can see it here on youtube. I enjoyed the article… considering the length and scope of it. With something like that, there is usually limited time to go into detail about the finer points of home education. I see these as more like a quick advert for home education rather than an informative article. The article was a good, positive piece which will hopefully do the rounds of the Internet, and contribute towards the education of the broader community.

Personally, I had heard about home education very briefly but a few times before I started to ponder the idea more carefully. Many people are like that- they simply need to hear it more regularly and more often and if they want to, they will investigate it as an option. If that was the aim of the article then I think they hit the target 🙂

“God must begin the work of grace in a person’s heart, or else a person will never be saved. Christ must first choose us and call us by His Spirit, or else we shall never choose Christ. Election to eternal life, is a truth of Scripture which we must receive humbly, and believe implicitly.”

Wifey Wednesday: Ways of Connecting

Last week Sheila introduced the idea that women, being relational and emotional, often need to talk before moving on to *other things*.

I can totally relate to the imaginary story she wrote about- thinking of milk and cleaning the fridge. Why I don’t even like cleaning the fridge yet it has been known to spring to mind! One thing that I’ve learned is that whilst we both have different needs and different ways of expressing ourselves there is a time for both. There are times when we have been separated due to work and, being a woman, I needed to connect with my husband in an emotional way before anything else. However this was not quite how he felt! I’ve learned that this isn’t wrong. he isn’t treating me as an object rather it is his way of connecting with me. For me, emotional connectedness and relating ideally come before any physical intimacy yet this is not often the case for males. By having an attitude of serving and giving I’ve found that both our needs can be met- just not at the same time. When a husband has a similar attitude then it’s likely that he’ll reach the same premise. It’s quite logical to accept that emotional and physical connection doesn’t happen at the same time. The circumstances often dictate which happens first but I’ve found that it’s quite possible for both needs to be met.

They key, for us, is to each look to the needs of each other first and have an Ephesians 5 mindset.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.

But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife , and the two shall become one flesh . This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:21-33

I am putting more emphasis upon our mariage as our children get older. Whilst not wishing the time to pass quickly until they leave home, I am aware that one day the children will have left the nest and be out in the world- leaving just John and I. I look forward to that time but don’t want to be like many marriages that fall apart once the children have left, simply because the couple forgot how to communicate and got on with living their own lives, neglecting the importance of togetherness. As regular readers know, when I focus on an area in my life it is bound to show up on my blog. 🙂

Internet Reading

Two weeks down… four weeks left! Till what? Till my man comes back home. He’s been away on a work exercise… and we all miss him terribly.

My internet reading for the week has led me only to a few places, but these sites were too good to not mention. I haven’t been doing much blog reading at all so these are just ones that I’ve stumbled across. In case you haven’t noticed I’ve done a little house/blog redecorating. Yes, some readers could be forgiven for thinking that I change my design as often as I clean the kitchen but it’s not true. I redecorate my blog more often! 😀 But I like this. I’m happy with it and will stay with it awhile.

  • Ria (an Aussie living in the UK) writes about “First came love, and then came marriage“. It’s not a pleasant topic but Ria managed to articulate thoughts that I’ve had for a few years yet been unable to write. *~ It seems as though Ria has deleted or unpublished this post. ~*
  • DanisDelights has written a blog post on The Power of Kindness.
  • CrossExamined.org looks like a great site… one that I haven’t fully read or exhasuted yet. I’ll get back to this site when I’m home from hospital.
  • Downloadable guide to family worship is worth a read.
  • Tim’s wife, Aileen writes to women on Challies.com. (NOTE: Not for little people’s eyes)
  • Also on Callies dot com is a wonderful article about ‘Solomon on Social Media’. You really should check it out. It’s great.
  • If Solomon were alive today and we were to ask him how we are to relate to one another in this digital world, if we were to ask him how we can honor God in our use of all these social media available to us today, here is how he might respond.

  • And here’s one to share with the children – a sound clip on Biblical Prosperity Teaching for Kids
  • When God addresses children directly in Ephesians 6, He gives them an amazing incentive for obedience. Here’s the deal: If you honor and obey your parents, you’ll enjoy a long, fruitful life.

  • I’ve been reading about (which usually means reading and not doing) raw foods with Ani Phyo. I want to try the Coconut Cake with Nutella Chocolate Hazelnut Sauce and Cashew Kream which you can see in the video to the right. I’m not a raw foodist… not by a long shot. However I find that I really need to focus on it in order to improve my diet and consume more fruit and veggies. Without this focus I will simply eat nothing but grain, carbs and starch. (Ohhh, but they’re soo yummy!) Doesn’t this Cauliflower Mash & Mushroom Gravy sound divine to you?
  • I’m on the lookout for a vegetable spiralizer as can be seen here. I’m keen to try a raw Angel Hair type Pasta with Marina Sauce which uses zucchini as its [counterfeit] pasta. C’mon, most of you know my surname. We’re Italian… there is no way at all that I can truly call spiralled zucchini pasta, but I’ll give it a go for the health of my family. I mean, call it anything else but pasta? What an insult. I am a very good pasta and pasta sauce cook. It’s one of the very few things that I do well in the kitchen. So I like it. But let’s get one thing straight. Zucchini is not and never will be pasta.

    Monday Meanderings

I’d like to share some links of my meanderings around the Internet this past week.

Some ask why more families don’t follow this Formula. Most parents are uncomfortable with the unconventional ideas. They teach as they were taught, unaware that such methods are responsible for many of today’s school problems. So they pay heavily for books which tie them, and their children down and burn them out.

There are several enemies of reading in the lives of boys. The educational system is largely feminized, and boys are often not challenged. We must remember that boys have always been boys, as the saying goes. There is nothing in the constitutional makeup of boys that is opposed to reading. Generations of boys grew to love books and lost themselves in stories, adventures, historical biographies, and the like.

    A new Bible reading plan

The goal of this system is simple, and twofold: To know scripture, and to love and obey God more!

I want to share a really cool Bible reading plan. At the beginning of the year when it is customary to begin all new things, many people were posting their new plan for Bible reading. Well, too many times I’ve spoken or written of my plan only to find that a few months later I have not stuck to it. I sometimes feel like a fraud. This taught me not to speak to quickly with my plans. I’ve learned that it’s better for me to speak about only the things that I actually have done rather than my plans of what I will do, for I don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

Being a believer for over 20 years means that I have tried all sorts of Bible reading plans (I link to many plans in this post) from chronological (which I love) to book-by-book reading and following the life of a character or event. They’re all good! But I was hankering for something new, something different, something I hadn’t done before. Now I realise that there is nothing new under the sun but this plan was new to me! So, what is it?

    Prof. Horner’s Bible-Reading System

Professor Grant Horner’s Bible-Reading System is challenging and life changing. It is unlike most other plans I have seen! It is not an in depth study nor a word study yet neither is it a speed reading plan. I have been gob smacked at how the readings speak into my life and illuminate God’s story of His plan and purpose for man. This plan lights it up and helps me to connect the dots!

Who devised this plan? His name is Professor Grant Horner, associate professor at The Master’s College–specializing in the Renaissance and the Reformation. He is also the Chair of Humanities at Trinity Classical Academy.

10 chapters a day from 10 different sections of Scripture! If this plan is used yearly, one could read through all the Gospels four times, the Pentateuch twice, Paul’s letters 4-5 times each, the OT wisdom literature six times, all the Psalms at least twice, all the Proverbs as well as Acts a dozen times, and all the way through the OT History and prophetic books about 1 ½ times. I have found that the inter-weaving allows the Bile to be its own commentary! It doesn’t tell me which Bible I must use, which is a good thing I believe. And it isn’t all laid out- I physically have to flick through my Bible, thus creating a greater awareness of where each book is. (Unless of course I’m using and online or computer Bible)

Each Bible reading time I read one chapter from each list in order. Yes, that is 10 chapters per day. However, unlike many other plans I’ve started or attempted I do not feel lousy or guilty if I miss a day or two. I simply pick up where I left off!  Sometimes I break it into two sittings – 5 chapters in the morning and the other 5 chapters at night. On day one, I read Matthew 1, Genesis 1, Romans 1, and so forth. On day 2, I read Matthew 2, Genesis 2, etc.

All Bible reading plans are good but I like this system as it is achievable, flexible and illuminating, bring God’s word alive to me.

    My Internet Reading

What do you read when reading it quickly: GODISNOWHERE ?

Now read it again. Slowly. What do you read now? 🙂 Hmmm, the placement of a space really makes all the difference eh?

Well, I don’t have an awful lot to say at the moment. 😯  Actually, that’s not true at all. 😮 I always have plenty to say but I have neither the time to spend composing a message or it isn’t right for me to say at this time or in this place. However, I’d like to point you to a few links of interesting sites that I’m reading at the moment.

An article called Higher Education by John Taylor Gatto

I’ve linked to this before but I’m re- reading it. I always find something new to give me some direction or focus with my young adults.

Part One of When Home Becomes A Dirty Word
I’ve known Maria in the cyber world for about 10 years or so. She is a lovely, smart lady who is very real and down-to-earth.

Also love this quote that is on Maria’s blog.

Live your life from your heart. Share from your heart. And your story will touch and heal people’s souls.
    ~ Melody Beattie

Amy over at Marigold Cottage asks about schoolwork and sick children.
I plan to offer her my response… one day. :idk:

Mom2Three is a darling gal who I’ve known online for a few years. I’ve been able to watch her process life’s circumstances and come to discern the Lord’s will for their family. (Sorry about the poor grammar but I have never met her husband but I know he’s involved in their decision. Hence why I fluctuate between ‘her’ and ‘their’). Her recent blog post, Seasons of Life and Change really leapt out at me especially where she talks about the positive changes around the dinner table.

After school and evening time with family takes on an entirely different importance. Dinner conversations are more lively and exciting as we all fill each other in about our days, sharing the high points, and the low points. (Before, dinner conversations were mainly filling in dad, as he was the only one who didn’t know what had been happening.) Now, I look forward to what my kids share that goes on in “their world”.

Even though my children aren’t at school the two girls work outside the home so I can relate to this too.

Just in case you can’t find it with google here is 100 Excellent Online Resources For Christian Homeschoolers contains some great links.

That’s all for now until I share about the program I’m using for my Bible reading.

    The Banabans

Just like I prefer to use Fair Trade products I can’t help but write about one of my favourite products. I love and use Coconut Oil but only particular brands. The brand I use if Banaban Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. But why that brand?

The Banabans are the ‘Forgotten People of the Pacific’ who have suffered from one of the greatest ecological and environmental disasters over the past century.

The Banabans are an indigenous people from a small Pacific island called Banaban or Ocean Island. In 1900 Banaban was discovered to be made of pure phosphate. This fateful discovery would see the beginning of 80 years of phosphate mining and the virtual destruction of the Banaban’s homeland.

In 1945 the Banaban people were relocated to Rabi Island over 10,000 miles away in the Fiji Island group. The Banabans and their island have now been left, forgotten, still suffering from of of the world’s greatest environment and human rights injustices. The phosphate rich deposits of banaban are now scattered across the farms of Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.

t_virgin-coconut-oil-350ml-1.7By purchasing from Nature Pacific and using the Banaban products, proceeds are used to regenerate and rebuild a better future for the Banaban people. If you would like more information you can visit the , Banaban website and/or download a pdf information sheet here.

I purchased my first bottle of oil from the ebay store…and ever since then I have purchased straight from the distributor in QLD. Not only is it a great quality oil and a good cause the service is second to none! I ordered my purchase online at 2pm on a Tuesday and I could not believe it when my oil arrived in my South Australian home on Wednesday afternoon. I mean, have you ever experienced such fantastic service? Once you order and use their products I’m sure you’ll never buy another brand of coconut product.

    Fast and foxy pdf reader

Want another tech talk tip? If you have not yet figured out that InternetExplorer is yuck and Firefox is a superior browser then you don’t know what you’re missing. First, zip over to Mozilla and download and foxit-300x2311install the free FF browser. Play with it, download themes and add-ons to enhance and speed your webinet (my new word for web stuff and Internet) browsing. But today’s tip is about your pdf viewer. (PDF stands for Portable Document Format) and many computers come pre programmed with Adobe Acrobat.

I used to use it but after a few years I felt it started getting bloated- taking a long time to even start the program and running very sluggish. Add to that the constant updates needed because of security issues. Argh, what a hassle. No more! Mozilla FF to the rescue…again. We have been using Foxit PDF Reader for quite some time now and it has many advantages:

    • It is lightweight in size and doesn’t use up all your PC’s memory just to run.
    • Is as secure, or more so, than Adobe.
    • Is user friendly and super easy to use.
    • Runs very quick.

There is more but I’ll let you read more about it when you pop over to download/install it from HERE.

    icon_getreader

It’s available for Windows and Linux users. Oh what? No Mac? For some odd reason, the Adobe reader works much better on Mac than on Windows. Go figure! However, I still use my ‘preview’ viewer on the Mac, which works very good.

    Joe's logbook and goals

For those who like the idea of CalorieKing but don’t want to record their food intake…or maybe for those that have other daily goals that are not to do with food/health/nutrition, then Joe’s Goals might just be the tool for you!

Goals of others are to: read, pray, take vitamins, blog, drink water, clean teeth, eat fruit, money, lessons with children, maths, English, exercise, piano practice and much more! Anything you need to keep track of.

Maybe you’d also like Joe’s LogBook
    http://www.joeslogbook.com/

Joe’s Logbook is a simple tracking tool that lets you organize your life using the power of your words. Track your activities by adding daily notes explaining your experiences, victories, and failures. Use the simple, single-page interface to setup and track the specifics of any area of your life. This could come handy for many things, including homeschooling. Want to read aloud to the children more? Do some exercise WITH the children? have the children cook a meal once a week?…Ah the possibilities are endless. Just remember to protect your privacy…this is the world wide web!

    Enjoy!

    Calorie King

healthfitnessDid you know that I’ve lost over 100kilograms? It’s such a pity that they keep finding me again! I worked off 20 kgs in order to become pregnant with Miss A. I put on a ton of weight and fluid with that pregnancy and never lost it again until after Miss R was born, when I worked off another (the same) 20kg.

A few years later and I lost a whopping 55 kgs! Then came a knee injury and then the reconstruction. That wasn’t so bad except I never quite got around to doing the physio and strengthening exercises that would enable me to go back to sport. I just  didn’t go back to playing sport again. Oh I coached and ran around a bit but didn’t play. Then we moved to the coldest place in Victoria (well, it seemed like it to me!). Actually we were on the NSW/VIC border and it was so bitterly cold that all I could do each day was rug up, sit next to the heater and read aloud to the kiddos while drinking copious amounts of tea and coffee. So what happened with my weight? Yup, half of the 55 kgs went back on again!

The best way I’ve always found to lose weight is by counting calories. Mind you, I’ve tried just about everything else- portions, low carb, high protein, blah blah blah…But for me, the most successful and easiest way to lose weight as part of my lifestyle is by counting calories – both intake and working them off! For years I’ve used Dr. Allan Borushek’s Calorie Counter, Diary and recipe book and just find it the best way to live. I can still have a glass of wine, milk coffee or a TimTam… just not all at once!

I’ve learned heaps from all sorts of books and programs but I still keep going back to Calorie Counting. Well, did you know it’s even easier than ever now?  CalorieKing is Australian…it allows you to input all your personal details and will even plan menus for you if you need. It allows all sorts of diet, nutrition and exercise tracking, recipes, forums, blogs and more! I can load in my regular foods so it is easier to keep track of it or I can use the menu plans designed for me and my needs and preferences. Best of all – it is FREE!

If you are struggling with weight and/or nutritional needs, why don’t you pop over to Calorie King? They have every type of tool and help to help you. Let me know if you join up – we can be buddies!

    Noteworthy Free Bible studies

    And Beginning with Moses
Are you looking for a way to clearly teach the Bible in a world where truth is relative and God is seen as a force? Have you been noticing a shift in our culture and are struggling to know how to share the gospel with this new generation? You want to teach the Bible, but when people don’t even understand who God is, where do you begin? Great for teens!

Sunday School Lessons on the Tabernacle
The following lesson plans have been designed for a Sunday school class or weekly Bible study for adults or young adults. Each lesson, which can be completed in 45 minutes to an hour, includes one or two main biblical passage(s) on which the lesson is based, a short background description, and several discussion questions. Through these lessons, your students will be able to better understand Christ’s redemptive work on the cross and how He fulfilled every aspect of the tabernacle. Our hope is that they will come away with a stronger, clearer and more accurate grasp of the Gospel.

    Bible Explorer
Bible Explorer is the fastest and easiest to use free bible study software. Over 2,800 Bible and Bible reference works available!

I’d like to encourage you to use the materials above to teach and instruct your family. If you use the materials, consider donating to the ministries. While this isn’t necessary it will further help spread God’ word. Please don’t fall for the trap that says ‘just because a book costs a few dollars it must be better than the free ones’. It’s just not true.

    Meet… Pearls of Truth

    pearlsoftruth

Priceless Pearls has been blogging since November, 2008 but she has a chuckling literary style, great love for the Lord and well, she posts regularly! That is always a positive in the blog world. I also know this blogger in real life. We’re quite good friends. Our children know each other and they were quiet good friends too…until they moved to another town. Hmphhh! Usually it is us that does the moving, so the experience was fairly new to us.

I had been trying to gently encourage Amanda to start a blog for many months…to no avail. Then one day she just decided to up and start one! I’m so glad she did. Priceless Pearls is where Amanda shares her life, thoughts, happenings and her opinions. She doesn’t claim to be 100% right or to know it all but she does like to share! she is a lovely lady, with an extraordinarily big heart who loves to give- of her time, of herself, in any way she can. She’s married to a lovely guy and she has two delightful children. She loves the Lord and this is extremely visible once visiting her blog and reading her posts.

Books, celebrations, Christianity and faith, her beloved Darcy, family, friends, motherhood, movies, nature, social issues, riotous randoms and anything else that takes her fancy for the day are just some of the topics she writes about in her deliciously funny way. At times you’ll be in fits of laughter and other times you’ll be left pondering the state of your own heart, after she shares her own journey. Not that PP writes to convict or to tell others how they should feel or how they should live. Rather she shares from her own life.  Seeing real faith worked out in the real lives of others is often convicting though, isn’t it?

    A few favourite posts:

    • She had her fellow blog friends in a tizz for days as she eluded to the fact that she was going overseas…wouldn’t tell us where, when or why but had a guessing for days. I think she secretly enjoyed the thrill of seeing us all in a frenzy.
    • I love that she also enjoyed the same series as me – Gods and Kings series by Lynn Austin. Amanda shared her own learnings in this post
    • I can’t choose a favourite post in the category of Christian/Faith so I’ll link to the whole category. Go read all her posts in this section.
    • Mum’s the word
    • Pearls from Job & Matthew
    30-10-07_1157

Amanda and me...non-stop talk and coffee

So if you’ve never visited Pearls of Truth before, why don’t you pop over there right now and say hello! I’m sure you’ll find something of interest.

    Tell Me Tuesdays

To go along with the new AussieHomeschool blog meme (Tell Me Tuesdays)  I thought I should at least try and post! So here goes.

Tell of your own blogging habits- frequent, infrequent, irregular, frequently irregular, etc

I blog when I can. When I want to. I never feel pressure to blog. Sometimes I’ve been known to blog twice a day but then I can go more than a week without posting.
How long have you been blogging?
I first started blogging over at HomeschoolBlogger.com about 4 years ago. I was hooked! I loved the community spirit that blogging provides as well as the opportunity to express my opinion and design my own site colours.

    Why do you blog?

Hmm, there are actually quite a few reasons. Initially I simply used my blog as a method of storing forum thread responses. I found that I was repeating myself a bit or copying and pasting from previous threads. So I started a blog and referred to that. However, it soon grew to be more than that. I use blog writing as way to process my thoughts. Writing has taught me a lot about critical thinking- sequential thinking. Actually, not so much the art of writing taught me this but the questioning from readers if my writing was unclear. I was forced to look back over a post and edit or clarify things.

I also like to try and encourage others and inform others. If I learn of a good resource, I want to share it. I want to share how we pursue a Bible based education in our home. I want to encourage people to not treat the Bible as purely another subject…but to see The Living Word as foundational to everything we do – even homeschooling and academics.

Lastly, I love to design sites, change colours and play with apps!

    What do you blog about?

I post my thoughts, opinions and things that I may be struggling with or learning. I post about our days, our learning opportunities and activities. I post about anything that comes to my mind. Here I asked readers, ‘what should I blog about‘?

What’s your favourite aspect of blogging?

The community! Meeting other bloggers and getting to know them via their blogs…reading their thoughts, opinions and events. The relationships that are developed.

What is your least favourite aspect of blogging?

    • That I can be 68% addicted to blogging!
    • The temptation to get caught up in time wasting with tags and all that kind of thing. If I do a tag, it has to be worth my time to do so.
    • The temptation to get so caught up with blogging that I neglect the online forums that I am a part of…that I am committed to serving.

    The AussieHomeschool Blog

    Another new blog?

    AussieHomeschool Blog

    AussieHomeschool Blog

Who is writing at the blog?
This blog will not be written by one person. Rather is will be a combined effort of all Australian home-learning bloggers.

    Why another blog?
Through this blog, we hope to encourage all homeschoolers parents, or those with an attitude of home-based-learning, by our written words- blogs. We aim to accomplish this by providing a common place in which to pull many Australian homeschool bloggers together so that the younger parents will glean wisdom from the old and the older ones may gain inspiration from the younger parents.

    What is it about?
It is a blog – a magazine style blog. The purpose of the Aussie Homeschool Blog is to unite Australian homeschoolers regardless of differing ages, schedules, methods, curricula, locations or preferences.
By following this blog, and those on the blog roll you will come to see some real Australian homeschooling parents- the nitty and the gritty, the ups and down and the down right funny.

When will there be new content?
We hope to update the blog weekly…although the meme’s will be added to by individual bloggers, as they like.

Where is this fantastic new blog?
You’ll find it at the following address – http://aussiehomeschool.com/blog

In fact, today is Tell Me Tuesday…a meme. There is also a meme to join in on Thursday and Friday. These meme’s use Mr.Linky, which is real easy to use, fun and it also drives more traffic to your website!

You can also join the blog roll which will give you more traffic and also enable you to visit other Aussie homeschooling bloggers!

So pop over, have a read… bookmark the site so you can visit again. You can subscribe via RSS or email and receive all new posts. The blog will be an invaluable source of inspiration, encouragement, information and fun…as much as you contribute.

    Hope to see you there!

    Meet…

    bb… my friend, Beyond Bluestockings.

Mrs. BB, as she is sometimes affectionately known, has been blogging for about one and a half years. I know Mrs. BB in real life. She may be petite, dainty and delicate in size but she has a huge heart, joyous nature, quick wit, a wicked (in the modern sens of the word) sense of humour and sharp intelligence. She is a delight to be around and a blessing to all those that she comes in contact with.

She homeschools her four darling children, loves good books, has an insatiable appetite for learning but possibly the best things about her is the fact that she, like me, loves her chocolate and coffee. 🙂

When you visit her blog, you’ll find a mixture of topics to stimulate your mind for she is a literal six-day Creationist with conservative political leanings combined with a mild red-necked opinion that she isn’t too afraid to share (politely and respectfully of course). Although raised as a feminist, she has a deep desire for God and His word and this will be obvious if you spend just one minute on her site. 😉

She writes on many topics, from education, parenting, science, politics, and books to religion and recipes. You are bound to leave her site just a little wiser yet without even realising it due to her clever writing style and amazing intellect and wit.

A few posts that I particular like and think are very useful are:

    Blogging to Learn
    Education, a victim of fashion?
Teach your young children to love reading
Truly Delightful Truffles (which I hope to taste next time we see each other IRL)
    Are you a Christian?
    Food as an idol and
a book review of Tortured for Christ.

Do pop over to BeyondBluestockings…You’ll see me over there as well. Read some of her posts and leave her a comment.

    Homeschool Link Up

Time for some Linky Love…some interesting posts I’ve found throughout my web wanderings.

    Homeschooling

You just have to check out Spunky’s post, Over the Hill Homeschooling. You’ll know you’ve become an over-the-hill homeschooling mom when….

    • You no longer read child training books, but gobble up everything on menopause.
    • You realize that the vendor who told you that his program was the ONLY spelling curriculum you’ll ever need, lied.
    • You talk about college choices more than curriculum choices.
    • You understand that you can have a very bad year and your children will never notice.

It’s funny and I found myself nodding along in agreement to almost every line!

Why Homeschool posted an entry titled Homeschool Fantasy vs. Reality.

Huber Hof Academy posted Whose Homeschool Life are you leading?

Amy Bayliss from In Pursuit of Proverbs has written a good 3 part series on Instilling a  love of reading. Part One, Part Two and Part Three.

Robin Sampson from Heart of Wisdom is wanting to give more stuff away in this post with a contest and some free downloads! Included is a must-read resource, which is a full chapter from her book. The chapter is Choosing and Using Homeschool Resources (31p PDF)Includes list of classics by grade level.

Robin has also posted an amazing entry about using digital scrapbooking for Nature Study. If you’re into nature study or CM’s methods, you will want to check this out!

Jeanne has a beautiful and excellent blog for those Aussies using good living books, CM’s methods or trying to Australianise Ambleside Online. Do check her blog out.

Need some writing prompts to help you teach writing to your children? Check out the WriteShop blog.

    Parenting

I found a great site called Intentional Parenting. They have a chart where, when I was truly honest with myself, I could see what type of parent I am and what type of parent I desire to be. The blurb for the site is: “Welcome to Intentional Parents, a Christian ministry that encourages parents to teach and train their children thoughtfully and deliberately to the glory of God.” This is a sister site of Simply Charlotte Mason.

    Books

Ever read Hinds Feet on High Places?  Here is a free study guide to go along with it. Not everyone agrees with the theology contained within this book, but it very well will help to lead you into a deper relationship with the Lord.

    Beautiful

Dana, from Living Stones Ministry, doesn’t post all that often but when she does, her posts are usually full of wisdom. Here she has a guest post that writes about the method that Jesus used when dealing with stress.  😉

    Carnival of Relaxed Homeschooling

Whoohoo, there’s a new carnival in town…and it’s right up my alley.

The Carnival of Relaxed Homeschooling is for anyone using relaxed, eclectic or less traditional methods of home education for any or all of their studies.

Using a relaxed approach for the upper grades, i.e., middle and high schoolers, becomes a little more challenging so if you use a relaxed style in any or all of your studies, you have something of great value to offer to other homeschoolers interested in becoming less formal in their approach. Submissions can include ideas, approaches, successes, “failures”, frustration, encouragement or anything else!

Submissions don’t have to be new posts, they can be, but it’s not necessary. What you do want to do, however, is look for one of your best posts. Dig deep if you want, just submit one of your posts that is especially pleasing to you!

If you are new to the concept of “carnivals”, check out this post.

I always enjoy the homeschooling carnivals. I love to see how others approach home education so long as I understand and accept that I don’t have to try and incorporate all the ideas I read into our family home.

kdesigns_avatarFirst, I have to tell you about a Christian homeschool mum who is really into website development. She has a new website where you’ll find a little information about her service…but I warn you- the website is a little like a mechanic who never gets to fix his own car. Okay, so it’s really me and my site  :rotfl:  but still, why don’t you pop over and have a look? Kerugma Designs is where you’ll find a few details about my new website development service, where I help you to build your online home. If you need a web presence at an affordable rate, give me a hoy as the website isn’t finished with up-to-date details just yet.

Okay, on to some more links that I have enjoyed recently:

    Super Simple Spiritual Sunday Meme

I used to participate in the SSSS meme but I haven’t for ages. Weekly meme’s just come around far too quickly for me 😀  However, I do like to share links and today is Sunday! So, I’m going to do a SSSS meme again posting some articles or sites I’ve enjoyed over the last week. So here are a few of the sites I’ve gleaned from this month.

    divbar

    • I used to tell my children about the dangers and futility of MySpace but what’s a person to do with the supposedly more mature FaceBook? I liked this post from Elizabeth Esther as she explains why she ‘broke up with FB‘.
    • Along with my continued learning about evangelism, I found a post by TeacherDave. The video posted on this blog is a clip of an atheist and his thoughts on witnessing or proselytizing. It’s quite interesting. Something in it for all of us, mehtinks.
    • ChristianAudio:  Each month christianaudio gives away a premium audiobook download for free. The way it works? They give away one audiobook download each month totally free, available only during that month, only once – ever.
    • Want to instill music appreciation in your High School aged children but don’t know how to go about it? Use this free curriculum from Harmony Fine Arts. You might like to listen to the podcasts and get an idea of how it all works.
    • Robin has a list of helpful meme’s to participate in, if you want to. Check her list here.

    Super Simple Spiritual Sunday

Oh, it’s SSSS time and I don’t have much to share. I haven’t been on the Internet much so that will be reflected in my SSSS…nevertheless, here goes!

As I recently posted about my own Internet habits, I was encouraged and given cause to reflect further when I read Jacqui’s post on Internet Dependancy
What My Parents Did Right-Heart-to-Heart with a Homeschooled Graduate, now Homeschool Mom! Audio available at Cindy Rushton’s site
    A Christian’s Cruise
    at Following Judah’s Lion
Today’s Trendy Sermons Often Lack Repentance over at Old Truth

    Super Simple Spiritual Sunday

    ?Super

Yes, it’s Super Simple Spiritual Sunday again. I love this meme as I get to share the blogs that have spiritually blessed, informed or edified me this past week.

    1. Cindy Rushton writes on Battling the Big D: Depression.
    2. Not My List, But Yours Be Done
    3. A Proverbs 31 Woman is what Robin shares on HOW.
    4. Nancy Wilson shares some wisdom on Idle Chatter
    5. Voice of Vision writes on how the gospel affects all of our life in “Let’s Do Lunch
    6. A timely article worth reading right to the end, including the comments is Experience/Relationship or Academic? at Catch the Fire ministries. Timely, as Australians are bombarded with propaganda as we are propelled toward an election. (not saying I agree with everything it presents but it is good food for thought)
    7. Perspective: The Invisible Woman – As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we’re doing it right. Go read this- it’s good.

    Super Simple Spiritual Sunday

I have not been one to get overly involved with many online meme’s but I’m really enjoying Robin’s Super Simple Spiritual Sunday meme. Tehee, it’s a chance for me to rave on about all the truth-filled, beautiful, inspiring and informing posts I’ve read during the week. 😀

Last week I included two links that posted about blogging addiction and blogging motivation that I thought were good. If you read them, you’ll also want to read Robin’s post which I’ll link below.

(By the way, all outside links will open in a new tab. Links within my own site will open in this tab. Of course, this only applies with FireFox, SeaMonkey or Opera. Who knows what will happen in IE. 😉 )
    1. Robin from Heart of Wisdom posted her thoughts on Blogging Addictions? Blogging Balance?
    2. Sally Clarkson wrote on Cultivating Civility
    3. Sherri writes on getting back into the home.
    4. Fish and Cans writes a thoughtful post on ‘Purge the evil person from among you
    5. Robin at HOW writes about a Classical Education.
    6. Marianne Miles writes a truthful post that we can all learn from with When Christians Abandon Their Own
    7. Dana writes on Beautiful without makeup!

And a few more because I didn’t blog last Sunday:

    Super Simple Spiritual Sunday

Super Simple Spiritual Sunday Meme is simply a list of encouraging links I have enjoyed this week.
    1) If you read my post about Teenage Rebellion, then you will want to read Sally Clarkson‘s post, ‘Suggestions for preventing and helping prodigals‘.
    2) Those Sneaky Idols over at As The Lord Works
    3) Blogging: What’s your motivation

Reading the Scriptures with a view toward the whole story is a post written by Says Simpleton: the sojourn of a simpleton searching for ways to bridge the gap between understanding and articulation.
    6) Phyllis Sather recommends Adobe? Digital Editions as an engaging new way to read and manage eBooks and other digital publications in this post.
    7) Are you, or your teen, suffering from Teenage Affluenza? This is a great satirical video that reminds us we lead such lucky lives.

    Feed on RSS

    “What Is RSS?

What do those orange RSS or XML buttons that abound on sites mean?
They are the latest rage…but more than that they are incredibly handy and a great time saver- perfect for the busy homeschool mum! You can receive newsfeeds or feeds from many sites including news, movies, blogs and ecommerce stores and more! It’s also a great feature for those on dial-up connection as you don’t have to surf the Internet for updates…the information that you want, comes to you!
    rss-icon-collection
RSS” means “Really Simple Syndication.” What it means to you is that when you subscribe to a site that has an RSS feed, you can keep up-to-date without having to check the site every day or week.

Most people are interested in many web sites whose content changes on an unpredictable basis, like this site. Repeatedly checking each site to see if there’s any new content can be time consuming. RSS is a great way to be notified of new and changed information. Notifications of changes to multiple web sites are handled easily, and the results are presented to you in a well organised format. You may have seen the RSS icon on various web sites or blogs (this one included). This icon lets you know that there’s content to which you can subscribe and view using an RSS reader.

You might have seen some of the little icons on various sites…if so, you might also have been confused by them! I hope to simplify the mystery a little for you and enable you to get started with RSS feeds.

How do you get started? It’s fairly easy!

With an RSS reader you can subscribe to many feeds and read the new entries all in one place, without having to visit individual Web sites to find out what’s new.

There are several different kinds of RSS readers. Some are dedicated programs for viewing RSS feeds, but they cost money and most homeschool mums would rather spend their money on books, especially when there are some great free feed readers available.

You can also view RSS feeds through web sites such as My Yahoo!, or my personal favourite, Bloglines.

Many web browsers also have built-in RSS support – Firefox, by “Live Bookmarks”, Safari has a built in RSS reader and even IE 7 will (although beta) support RSS.Windows — RssReader and Google Reader are popular online feed readers available for download. Need more information? Here is a short video that explains the concept…

Below is a short, 3.5min video which explains it very well. If you are confused about using RSS feeds but want to know more, this video is for you. The short video will teach you why feeds are good and how to set one up. This video will teach you, the homeschool mum, how to make the most of your time. Let me know if you find this sort of information helpful.

There! You should be set to receive the information that you want, while saving time to get on with the things that you want to do.

Why don’t you subscribe to my blog and receive post and comments via RSS?

    Carnival Time

I really like visiting the Carnival of Homeschooling…it’s a great way to travel around the world and read other’s thoughts and see things that they do in their families.

This edition of the Carnival is being over at Sprittibee’s. Not only has she compiled the post but she has added her only bee flavour to it. A carnival is simply a place where the carnival host showcases a group of blog posts, dedicated to a particular theme, in this case the theme is homeschooling. The host writes a few lines to whet your appetite so that you will go on over to the full blog and read the complete post. For each new carnival, there is a new host.

This new carnival will have you busy for days…enjoy!

If that isn’t enough to keep you hewing for awhile, then the Christian Carnival certainly will. It is being hosted by MandiKaye.

New Search Engine for the Visual Learner

    G’day,
Yep that’s right. I’ve been away for quite some time and I come back to blog about a new search engine.

Well, it’s called Mooter and it is different from other search engines in that it is more visual. It arranges the ‘hits’ into clusters. You can then select the cluster that best describes what you are looking for.

As an example, I typed in ‘homeschool’ which we all know is very broad and generalised. In a visual way (much like a mind-map) it sorted the hits into these categories:

    homeschool
    homeschooling
    home
    resource
    curriculum
    christian
    children

and then comes up with another cluster of even more information.

Now while I’m not about to leave google, I think this could be a very good resource and prove to be a valuable tool.

    Check it out at http://www.mooter.com/moot
